Over ninety students were divided into groups of four and participated in completing twelve "metric activity" stations set up in two science labs. For example, the "Guess and Measure" station asked students to examine a solid block, guess its volumn in cubic centimeters, then measure the actual volumn, and finally, label the figure in cubic centimeters. Another station, the "Standing Long Jump" asked students to jump from a standing position and measure with a meter stick how many centimeters he or she jumped. From there students converted the centimeters into millimeters.
In Language Arts, following the activity, the students completed several "Critical Thinking" essay questions. An assessment sheet gave students direction and explained how many points could be earned for each activity. Primarily, the students practiced math calculations and conversions, the correct use of science equipment, and expository writing skills. All of these are in line with the Connecticut Mastery Test applications.
The Gold Team teachers, Mr. Raczkowski, Mr. Olivieri, Mrs. Lamanno, and Miss Leonard are very proud of how well the students completed this "hands-on" interdisciplinary unit on the Metric System.
